Ways of Seeing

The Bridge at Cove Park (photography, Alan Dimmick)

Join Cove Park and multidisciplinary artist Deniz Uster for a unique workshop across Cove Park’s 50-acre site.

During this exploratory walk you will be encouraged to engage with the landscape through a synesthetic lens. You will be invited to experiment with how one sense can awaken another, using simple tools like ear trumpets and binoculars to ‘hear’ the texture of moss or ‘taste’ the forest’s sounds. We will encourage you to suspend disbelief and play with possibilities while thinking about different ways to see nature and become more aware of our senses. Afterwards you are invited to join us in the Jacobs Building for creative journaling and reflection over coffee and biscuits.

This workshop offers a rare opportunity to engage with Cove Park’s ecosystem in a radically new way. This immersive experiences will lay the groundwork for a science fiction film to be produced at a future date, for which Deniz will be seeking around 10 volunteers to act within these extraordinary sensory landscapes.

Artist Deniz Uster is known for a practice that fuses geological and scientific inquiry with science fiction, Uster crafts narratives exploring alternative social structures. Her work challenges us to consider a collectivity that extends to microorganisms, elements, and forces – a profound reimagining of our interconnectedness.

We will meet at the Jacobs Building at Cove Park before the site tour.

This workshop will take place outside and with limited facilities so please dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear for walking.

If you have any questions about workshop accessibility, please get in touch with Emma Henderson.
