Spotlight on 25: Polly Staple

As we continue celebrating our 25th Anniversary through May 2026, we are excited to share testimonials from former residents and members of the Cove Park community. Our first Spotlight on 25 is by curator Polly Staple, awarded the Visual Arts Creative Development Residency in 2007.

‘In 2007, my curators’ residency at Cove Park offered something rare — the freedom to think and explore ideas surrounded by the extraordinary views across Loch Long, great fellow residents and the very kind Cove Park team. I found new perspectives that continue to shape my work today. Cove Park was not just a residency, but marked a transformative point in my practice, and I’m proud to celebrate its 25th anniversary.’

Polly Staple was Director of Collection, British Art at Tate (2020–2024), overseeing acquisitions and research from 1500 to the present. In 2025, she continued work on the Ed Atkins survey at Tate Britain. Previously, she led Chisenhale Gallery (2008–2020), supporting a new generation of British artists including Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Ed Atkins, Helen Marten, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, and others. Earlier roles include Director of Frieze Projects (2002–06) and Editor at Large at frieze magazine (2003–08). Staple has commissioned projects, curated exhibitions, and developed award-winning audience engagement programs. She has written and edited widely, served on juries and committees, co-founded Common Practice, chaired the Elephant Trust, and advised the Arts Council Collection. She was the first Cubitt Curatorial Fellow (2001) and received the Genesis Prize (2014).
