Jane Alexander is a novelist and short story writer based in Edinburgh. During her residency she will work on her third novel, developing her longstanding interest in uncanny fiction in an ambitious project that encompasses multiple timelines and protagonists. The novel will explore intersections of dreams and reality alongside different kinds of marginalisation, through secret female societies and an uncanny return of empire made manifest through tropes of burial and haunting. This project extends a rich seam of interest for Jane in uncertain borders between the real and not-real; her most recent novel investigated the impacts of immersive virtual realities in a near-future scenario, and a forthcoming short story collection is fundamentally concerned with uncertainties around reality and the preternatural. At Cove Park, Jane intends to flesh out initial ideas and progress with an early draft of the novel.
