Cal Mac graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2020. Working between sculpture and video, he develops an emotional inquiry into how systemic addiction profits from dependency, shame and love. After graduating, he received a short film commission from Film and Video Umbrella, where he used a combination of archival footage, poetry and interviews to expand on unspoken manifestations of addiction in Scotland. This year, he did a residency at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, where he was able to continue his work on intimate bodies. With these sculptures, he uses the bodies distribution of weight as a language, that speaks of both fantasy and desperation whilst being separated from his partner during the pandemic. His work also often uses nature, specifically water, as a parallel freedom to hedonistic methods of escape. He hopes to develop this element of his practice during his residency at Cove Park in June.

This residency is generously supported by the Crerar Trust.
