Shona Brown
Duration
Shona Brown is a Glasgow-based flautist and music producer whose work explores atmospheric and emotionally resonant sound worlds for flute, voice and electronics. Her solo practice blends contemporary classical, ambient and electronic music with subtle folk influences, creating spacious compositions shaped by breath, texture and stillness. She has released solo work and performed nationally, including live broadcasts for BBC Radio Scotland and STV Glasgow.
As a flautist, Shona has collaborated with a wide range of artists and organisations including Mogwai, Rockstar Entertainment, Barbara Thompson, the National Theatre of Scotland, Eddie McGuire and Opera Bohemia. She studied classical flute at the Royal Northern College of Music (BMus, First Class Honours) and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (Masters with Distinction). At seventeen she won the Scottish Woodwind Final of BBC Young Musician of the Year, and has since received awards including a Donald Dewar Arts Award, the RNCM Concerto Prize and an award from the Help Musicians UK Transmission Fund.
Alongside her artistic practice, Shona is deeply committed to community music-making. She founded and runs SoundRoutes, a community choir organisation operating across central Scotland, and has led projects including Addiewell Prison Choir, Musical Memories for people living with dementia, and Beat It, a virtual choir for people affected by cancer.
Her recent work seeks to cultivate quiet feelings of awe and wonder—emotions she has consciously turned towards during her recovery from breast cancer.
