Alaya Ang
Duration
Alaya Ang is a visual artist whose practice is grounded in material exploration, sound, and collective participation, with a focus on maritime trade, migration, and the intersections of colonial histories and environmental concerns. At the core of their work is storytelling through materials, uncovering how materials carry histories and connect to personal and collective narratives.
Recent exhibitions include Platform24 at Edinburgh Art Festival (2024), Talbot Rice Residents at Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh (2024), and HELD at Mimosa House, London (2024). They were part of the Talbot Rice Residents programme from 2022 to 2024.
Ang’s curatorial experience includes leading Confluence at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow, a research and curatorial programme fostering artistic exploration of the politics and poetics of water.
Currently, they are developing new work that bridges industrial processes with organic materials, such as soil and handmade paper, while deepening research into the Straits Settlements. Their practice remains rooted in decolonial methodologies, ancestral knowledge, and the ethical engagement of community narratives.
‘At Cove Park, I plan to focus on experimenting with papermaking and to work on how paper can be manipulated into sculptural forms. I will develop sketches and prototypes to integrate industrial materials such as metal with organic elements like soil and handmade paper, to understand how different material compositions generate new narratives and tensions.’
