Jonathan Johnson

Still from the film ‘Low Season,’ 2019, Jonathan Johnson (courtesy of the artist).

Jonathan Johnson is a photographer and filmmaker whose work examines the idea of place and the shifting relationships between humans and the natural world. His practice weaves together autobiography and landscape, drawing from his mixed-heritage background, travel, and backcountry exploration. Through still and moving images, he reflects on how personal and collective histories shape our understanding of place.

Collaboration is central to his work, engaging with composers, writers, poets, designers, and fellow artists to create photographic prints, books, films, and teaching projects. He has received awards and grants from Duke University, The Society for Photographic Education, CINECAFEST, The National Endowment for the Humanities, Puffin West Foundation, Greater Columbus Arts Council, and The Ann Arbor Film Festival.

His work has been exhibited at film festivals and galleries in over 30 countries, including Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, Wexner Center for the Arts, Galleria Sment, Africa Centre (Cape Town), Sofia Arsenal Museum of Contemporary Art (Sofia), Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, Benaki Museum (Athens), UnionDocs (Brooklyn), Mimesis Documentary Festival, and EXiS Film Festival (Seoul).

Previously, Johnson was a competitive ski racer and held positions in the music industry and public affairs.
