Dierdre Pearce
Duration
Dierdre Pearce is an artist currently living in Canberra, Australia. Originally from far northern Australia, she explores materiality, material cultures, landscapes and rituals of place making, with a focus on rootlessness, fragmentation and alienation.
Her approach is based in sculpture and spatial practices including MPhil research (2021) and is informed by past experience in science research, including a PhD in biological chemistry. Her practice is project based; outcomes include drawings, collage, textiles, installation, community projects and performance. She exhibits in diverse environments, including contemporary art and craft spaces, festivals, community hubs and online environments.
Recent projects include Reimagination (2024), a year-long process bringing together artists, designers, hobbyists, students and tradespeople to reimagine, remake and repurpose objects which failed to attract interest at auction, culminating in an exhibition and auction of the new objects at the same location during the 2024 Craft & Design Canberra Festival. Haiku (2024-) is an ongoing journal of ephemeral objects which documents growing attachment to a new home. Currently, Wagga (2025), draws on the rough quilts made by itinerant labourers in southern Australia in the nineteenth century, using remnant textiles from home making and care to create objects which can function as banners, shelters, and sites of ritual.
