Rosie Newman
Duration
Rosie Newman is a multi-disciplinary artist based in the Highlands of Scotland, working from her studio in The Stables, Cromarty. A graduate of Camberwell School of Art (Sculpture) and UHI Shetland (Social Art Practice), she works across sculpture, photography, performance, painting, and audio to explore mythological themes and the interconnectedness between people and the sea.
Her ongoing project, Song Tides, investigates these connections through spiral-shaped headdresses worn by individuals with ties to the sea. In collaboration with marine biologist Dr. Francisca Vermeulen of the Scottish Association for Marine Science, Rosie created a headdress adorned with micro-algae illustrations inspired by Antarctic research and climate change. This was documented through a photographic series featuring the biologist wearing the headdress while submerged in the Firth of Lorn, merging art and environmental advocacy.
As a lecturer at UHI Inverness and member of the Black Isle Collective, Rosie is supported to develop her environmental work during her residency at Cove Park. Her practice integrates phenomenology, examining human perception and its relationship with the environment, using art, education, and storytelling to engage audiences. She also plans to include dancers and models in her work, inspired by her experience at the Argyll Hope Spot residency, and aims to connect with sea-related communities globally.
Song Tides will culminate in 2025 with sculptures, photographs, and performances exploring the human connection to the sea, bringing these narratives to a wider audience.
