Born in Glasgow, Janice Affleck studied Architecture then moved to Asia for 15 years, completing a PhD at the University of Hong Kong and took up ceramics while on maternity leave.

Returning to Glasgow, she began to explore rediscovered places using clay, language, photography and digital media and link this with her architectural interests into sense of place. In order to strengthen a largely self-taught practice she undertook an MA Ceramics at Bath School of Art, graduating January 2020, while a full-time member at Glasgow Ceramics Studio.

During her Masters project, she studied the 150-years old timber pond remains in the River Clyde and the surrounding intertidal zone and translated her assemblage of glossaries, reflective writing, photographs and sketches, into slip-cast, parian sculptural vessels. The weather-beaten profiles form the shaped face of the rectangle, contrasting with the clean, smooth geometry of the rectangular forms.

This residency will allow an immersion in Cove Park and the surrounding area through a process of engagement and reflection to act as a resource for a new body of work.
