Jamie Johnson is a Glasgow based artist that works across collage, painting and printmaking. His work communicates observations and ideas by creating an autonomous visual language through form, colour and symbolism. He often dyes paper by hand to create textural collage material, allowing a sense of controlled chance into his work. Cut fragments are arranged intuitively to create abstract compositions, whilst the suggestion of a narrative is driven by his surroundings through gathering onsite sketches, photos and field recordings. These are interpreted in the form of amoebic compositions, often presenting an ethereal landscape, offering a visual representation of symbiotic relationships that invite the viewer to decode layered imagery through their own experiences.

Jamie has exhibited across the UK as well as in Denmark and Canada, with solo exhibitions at The Chopping Block Gallery in London (2018) and Govan Project Space in Glasgow (2020). He was recently awarded ‘The Purcell Paper Prize’ and the ‘Nancy Graham Artist Book Prize’ for work exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. His work is held in collections by Creative Scotland, Edinburgh City Art Centre, University of Dundee and various private collections.
