Fiona Soe Paing is a music producer, singer and sound artist based in Aberdeenshire, and of Scottish/Burmese heritage. She has been creating music since 2007, with a continuing underlying theme of language, place, belonging and identity. Her first solo track, sung in Burmese, was included on an international “World Music” compilation album for Warner music.  Her 2016 debut album and “Made In Scotland” Edinburgh Fringe show Alien Lullabies, was sung in a combination of Burmese, English and abstract improvisation.  On her latest album, “Sand, Silt, Flint” Fiona returns to her roots, taking inspiration from the landscape and folklore of Aberdeenshire, and singing using the Doric dialect, unique to the area.  This project was sparked by discovering she is related to one of north-east Scotland’s original ballad singers, John Strachan. With a residency as Associate Artist with Aberdeen Performing Arts, Fiona started to develop her album of re-imaginings of traditional ballads and local folk tales, each linked to a specific north-east location. The album has received widespread critical acclaim, with Four Stars reviews in The Guardian and Songlines Magazine, “sublimely powerful…” and a recommendation from Iggy Pop on his BBC 6 Music show. Fiona gratefully acknowledges funding support from Creative Scotland and Help Musicians UK.
