
Melina Berkenwald

Melina Berkenwald is an Argentine visual artist who also works in cultural production, art management, and curatorial projects. She is the founder and director of URRA, an independent non-profit organization that runs art residencies in Buenos Aires since 2010. Trained in painting, she has worked with various media depending on the nature of each project, often combining techniques such as drawing, etching, embroidery, and photography. In her recent work, she has returned to oil painting, exploring intimate imagery and focusing on organs that resemble odd creatures, as well as still lifes that act as complementary landscapes to the interior of the body. She holds a theory-based PhD in Art and Communication from Westminster University (1999-2002), an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art (1996-97), and a Professorship in Painting from the School of Fine Arts Prilidiano Pueyrredón (1990-94). A selection of her solo exhibitions in Buenos Aires includes Smol, Ensayo General, Vasari Gallery, 713 Gallery, Casona de los Olivera, Centro Cultural Recoleta. Also at Boltax Gallery in New York and Bearspace in London. She also participated in several group shows in Argentina and abroad, and in art residencies including: Cohmla (North Uist, 2003), Khoj (Bangalore, 2003), Atlantic Center for the Arts (Daytona, 2005), Het Wilde Weten (Rotterdam, 2007), Kiosko (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, 2007).
