Debjani Banerjee

Debjani Banerjee, Crying Bitilasana on Yoga Mat, 2024. Ceramic, enamel paint, rhinestones, jewellery, yoga mat and spray paint (photography, Dom Moore)

Debjani Banerjee is an Edinburgh-based artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans performance, dance, sculpture, textiles, film, and collaborative making. Drawing from her British Bengali heritage, Banerjee explores themes of cultural dissonance, identity, and belonging through a post-colonial lens. Her work reconsiders the complexities of living within and between cultures, interweaving personal narratives with broader questions of migration, and memory.

Her practice is rooted in family conversations, contemporary and historical Indian pop culture, Hindu iconography, sacred ritual, and traditional craft techniques. Her practice is deeply engaged with workshops, participatory methods, and archival research.

Recent exhibitions include Jalsaghar at CCA Glasgow (2024), KARST, Plymouth and Mimosa House, London (both 2025). Alongside her practice she is the Curator for Learning at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.
