Good Enough: Open Studio

Time
Following a development residency in May, NOCTURN brings Good Enough back to Cove Park for a day of sharing work-in-progress.
Founded by John Darvell, NOCTURN creates participatory dance storyworlds with later-life dancers and communities, blending co-creation, everyday tech and cinematic storytelling. Good Enough is a portable storybox experience exploring masking, identity and the hidden self, built from the real stories of gay, bi and trans men over 50, and others who were raised and read as male. You can take part in one of two ways.
Try the experience: one-to-one sessions
12pm – 3pm, 30-minute slots
Step inside Good Enough for yourself. This is a one-to-one experience: you and the storybox alone, using tactile objects, augmented reality, haptic feedback and bone conduction audio to move through the interior world of an older gay man and the hidden self he carried alongside his visible life.
Each session runs across a short onboarding, the one-to-one experience itself, and a conversation with the team afterwards about what you encountered. Slots run every 30 minutes on the half hour, so please arrive a few minutes before your booked time.
If you’re willing, we’d love to record a short video interview with you afterwards about your experience. This is entirely optional and no is a complete answer.
Hear from the makers: artist talk
4pm – 6pm
Join John Darvell and Christopher Hunt, the directing and technical team behind Good Enough, for an open conversation about the process so far: what’s worked, what’s been hard, and where the project goes next. The talk includes a group walkthrough of the experience, so you can see how it’s built without going through it solo.
Content and access information
Good Enough deals with real, sometimes difficult material. Please read before booking.
- Flashing lights: this work uses LED lighting effects that include flashing or rapidly changing light. It is not recommended for anyone with photosensitive epilepsy.
- Themes: the work explores hiding one’s true self, isolation, being unseen, ageing, and the pressure to perform an acceptable version of yourself for others. It includes sequences of building frustration and release, and moments of intense emotional intensity.
- Sensory content: you’ll wear a haptic vest (felt vibration/pressure against the body) and bone conduction headphones (audio felt through the jaw/skull rather than in the ear).
- Support: Switchboard LGBT+ are our welfare and safeguarding partner on this project. If anything in the work brings something up for you, our team on the day can point you to support, and you can also contact Switchboard directly at 0800 0119 100 or switchboard.lgbt. Free, confidential, available every day, 10am–10pm.
- Access: if you have questions about physical access, sensory sensitivities, or anything else that would help you decide whether this is right for you, contact Alex Marrs before the day.
Good Enough is supported by Immersive Arts and Creative Scotland’s National Lottery Open Fund for Organisations, in collaboration with Switchboard LGBT+, OurStory Scotland, Sanctuary Queer Arts, Cove Park, Artlink Central, The Work Room, CityMoves Dance Agency SCIO, Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Birnam Arts and Dancin Oxford.
