Laurie Motherwell is a working-class, Glaswegian playwright. His work has been described as ‘absorbing’, ‘a gem’, ‘hilarious’ and ‘heartfelt’. In 2024, his play Roost was performed by A Play, Pie and a Pint. That year he was also a finalist for the Arts Foundation futures Award for Theatre Writing, and a member of the BBC Scottish Voices Cohort. In April 2023 his play Sean and Daro Flake it ’til They Make It premiered at the Traverse Theatre, before being performed again during that year’s Edinburgh Fringe. Later that year Laurie was the Tron Theatre’s Resident Writer. His play Roxana (a reimagining of the novel By Daniel Defoe) created with Director Shilpa T-Hyland, was produced by Paisley Book Festival as a filmed performance in 2021.

He has developed new work with other organisations including the National Theatre of Scotland, An Tobar and Mull Theatre, and Macrobert Arts Centre. He has been a recipient of a MGC Futures Bursary, and a Self-Led Bursary and New Playwrights’ Award from the Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland. Laurie is a proud member of the Scottish Society of Playwrights.
