Jo Mango
Duration
Jo Mango is a Glasgow-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Her work spans genres and forms including folk, pop, art- and alternative, via theatre, film, multimedia installation and live performance. Her third solo album ‘The Lightswitch’ was released in June. It follows up her acclaimed 2012 LP ‘Murmuration’, continuing a career that has spanned more than two decades and seen her write with the likes of Teenage Fanclub; tour worldwide as part of Vashti Bunyan’s band; and perform alongside David Byrne, Devendra Banhart and many others. Her work has featured live in film (‘You Instead’ – David Mackenzie), gig theatre (award-winning ‘A Giant on the Bridge’) and installation (‘100 Voices’ – National Theatre of Scotland).
Made alongside producer Adem with strings from the Elysian Collective (Pulp, Beth Gibbons) and drums from Chris Vatalaro (Radiohead, Brian Eno), ‘The Lightswitch’ is a concept album that explores Mango’s feelings for music itself. Following in the footsteps of many women who have given up on music as a career, it meditates upon a time in exile from her calling, and what it would mean to give up altogether on something she feels both deeply in love with, yet that sometimes feels challenging to pursue in public.
