Juliet Henderson

View of ponds, Winter.

Juliet Henderson studied fine arts at the Ecole Normale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, France in the mid-eighties. Since then, she has been a practising visual artist (main medium oil on canvas), an academic since 2000, and a butoh/dance practitioner since 2016. In 2023, she retired from work in Oxford as a lecturer and moved to Edinburgh.

Her move away from the south to a life in the north by the coast in Edinburgh prompted a different focus in her work. The light, the winds, the sea, the smells, the sea mists, the constantly changing colours and shapes of the skies, sea and coastline, and the spirit of local folk on the beach, boats or in the harbour seared straight into her being then transmuted into her paintings. She also engaged with the energy and force of the sea in her butoh work.

Her practice currently is to look closely at and listen hard to small, local, unmarked corners of her local area. Increasingly, she is feeling her way into the resonance and relationship between her visual and butoh practice – both embodied in different ways. She intends to focus on this during her winter residency at Cove Park.
