Duration
Dr. Lisa Moffitt is an Associate Professor of Architecture and Director of Graduate Programs at Carleton University in Ottawa Canada, and design editor of Technology|Architecture + Design journal. From 2010-2020, she was Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, where she also completed her PhD Architecture by Design.
Her research uses physical models, prototypes, and material experiments to visualise material and spatial processes and impacts of climate change. Her book, Architecture’s Model Environments (UCL Press, 2024) expands on histories of building technology to shed new light on how physical models conventionally understood as engineering experimentation devices enable architectural design speculation about atmospheric mediation. Her current research focuses on documenting Canadian sites of accelerated climate change and on honing methods for designing with regenerative building materials, particularly earth and fiber.
Her work has been published in the Journal of Architectural Education, Architectural Research Quarterly, Architecture+Culture, and Journal of Landscape Architecture, among others. Her material models have been exhibited internationally and she has a forthcoming solo exhibition at the University of Colorado, Denver school of architecture.
‘I will use my time at Cove Park to develop a series of regenerative material models that incorporate a new material system – Scottish wool fleece – into the rammed earth mix. Wool offers tensile strength and insulative properties while also creating a curious furry surface that invites tactile engagement. This work will be featured in the ‘Forgotten Fleece’ Scottish touring exhibition, which will open in June 2025.’
