Deirdre Nelson guest artist at Cowal Open Studios 2015
11 September 2017 - 28 September 2017 / Dunoon Burgh Hall
Dunoon Burgh Hall Trust have invited artist and previous resident Deirdre Nelson and her Glasgow School of Art (GSA) tutor, Hannah Frew Patterson MBE DA to exhibit their work as guest artists at Cowal Open Studios (COS).
Hannah worked as a designer for J&P Coats Ltd. before becoming a student at GSA where she subsequently taught for 22 years, being awarded an MBE in 1992 for services to embroidery. Her work has a special style incorporating 3D elements and meticulous stitchery. The panels Hannah made for Cardross Parish Church, local to Cove Park, are an outstanding example of ecclesiastical embroidery.
Deirdre Nelson, resident at Cove Park in 2010, was a student of Hannah’s at GSA. She also has a master’s degree in philosophy. Her work, fuelled by intensive research, crosses boundaries between traditional craft and contemporary art in an inclusive and humorous way. Community projects form an important part of her practice.
Hannah Frew Patterson and Deirdre Nelson runs from 11 – 28 September 2015.
Join Hannah and Deirdre In Conversation at Dunoon Burgh Hall on Saturday 12 September to hear them discuss their methods, inspirations and relationship that has taken them from GSA’s Embroidery and Weave department to the present day.
Cowal Open Studios runs from the 25 – 28 September 2015.
